The Unilever brand is a trusted name in nutrition, hygiene, and personal care. Unilever has been adding vitality to the lives of its consumers by creating products that embody the vitality mission – helping people feel good, look good and get more out of life. With 400 brands spanning 14 categories of home, personal care and foods products, no other company touches people’s lives in so many different ways.
Unilever aims to meet the everyday needs of households everywhere, to anticipate the aspiration of consumers and to respond creatively and competitively with branded products and services to raise their quality of life. A strong advocate of research and development, Unilever has continuously strived to understand the needs of its consumers and pioneer various channels to engage with them. By investing heavily in proprietary technology and consumer insights research, Unilever has achieved many breakthroughs and firsts over the years. Deep roots in local markets and first-hand knowledge of the cultures make Unilever a truly multi-local multi-national.
In Malaysia, the Unilever journey began in 1947 with the opening of the first Lever Brothers soap and margarine manufacturing plant in Bangsar. Then costing RM12 million, it was reputed to be the largest factory in the country with machines that could wrap 124 pieces of soap a minute. The existence of the factory created unprecedented job opportunities for hundreds of Malaysians.
A significant turning point for the company emerged when it changed its corporate name from Lever Brothers to Unilever (Malaysia) Holdings Sdn Bhd in 1994. With the adoption of the global name, the company expressed a new status and performed as a multi-local multi-national business entity. Today, many Unilever brands have attained ‘household’ awareness status, having become a part of many Malaysian homes, both in the cities and rural outskirts.
Currently, Unilever Malaysia has a portfolio of 14 key brands, which include personal care products such as Sunsilk, Dove, Lux, Clear, Lifebuoy, Axe, Fair & Lovely and Rexona, homecare product such as Breeze and food products such as Lipton, Knorr, Lady’s Choice, Planta and Wall’s. Many of these brands are also leaders in their respective categories.
